The Feeding Value of Different Levels of Lentil (Lens Culinaries) Hull for Yearling Lambs Supplemented with Wheat Bran and Molasses, and Fed Teff Straw as a Basal Diet

The study was conducted at Holeta Agricultural Technical Vocational Education and Training College in West Shewa Zone using twenty five yearling lambs with an average initial live body weight of 17.6±1.66 (mean ±SD) kg. The objectives of the experiment were to evaluate the feeding value of different levels of lentil hull supplementation on feed intake, and live weight gain of sheep fed on teff straw. The treatments were 0g lentil hull+200gram wheat bran+20gram molasses +teff straw ad libitum, 250g lentil hull+200gram wheat bran+20gram molasses +teff straw ad libitum, 300g lentil hull+200gram wheat bran+20gram molasses +teff straw ad libitum, 350g lentil hull+200gram wheat bran+20gram molasses +teff straw ad libitum, and 400g lentil hull +200gram wheat bran+20gram molasses +teff straw ad libitum. Higher DMI (744g DM/head/day) was recorded on lambs that received 350g/head/day lentil hull. Animals fed on the control diet lost weight (-1.11g/day), whereas the supplemented groups gained 46.7-64.4g/day. Among supplemented groups, lambs that received 350 and 400g /day lentil hull had better nutrient utilization, response in live weight gain. It is concluded that supplementing lentil hull at about 350gram/day improved total feed intake and performance of the animals.
