Assessment of Feeding Practices and their Effect on Cattle Production in Rubaya Sector, Gicumbi District in Rwanda

Eng. MUBASHANKWAYA Isaac
The feed remains always a capital constraint for the improvement of the cattle production in Rwanda. Considering this highlighted issue, we have conducted the research with aim of assessing feeding practices and their effect on cattle production in Rubaya Sector, Gicumbi District in Rwanda. A sample of 62 cattle keepers representing their households drawn from 1462 households keeping cows by using the Alain Bouchard’s formula. Observation and questionnaire was used to collect data which were processed and analyzed by using statistical tools such as MS Excel and SPSS 17. After analyzing our results about identification of respondents we have found that the highest number of respondents is males (87%), the great number of respondents has the range of age from 35 up to 51 years old (64.5%) and many of respondents have studied only primary schools (62.1%). In relation to the feeding, 16.2% of respondents used Penisetum purpureum, Caliandra spp and Leucaena leucocephala while 4.8% of respondents used maize, wheat and soja brand. Other results showed that 30.7% are only cattle keepers who were trained about cattle feeding, Penisetum purpureum is used without being chopped by 88.9% of respondents, 25.8% of respondents do not have cowshed feeding accessories such as feeding trough and watering trough. All of these above results confirmed that cattle keepers in Rubaya Sector use traditional feeding practices. The available feeds are not sufficient to cover all needs of those cow breeds found in the study area.
